Cleaning Tips: Save Money on Spring Cleaning

I love 'spring cleaning' and freshening up my home after months of winter. The idea of cleaning and organizing the whole house may seem expensive. But in reality, spring cleaning can be quite inexpensive, in fact you may come out of your next spring cleaning adventure with a few extra dollars in your pocket. Here are some cleaning tips that everyone can use.

Mix Your Own Cleaning Solutions

Expensive cleaners don’t make for better cleaning. In fact, you can get the best cleaning results with a combination of about five inexpensive ingredients that you can mix at home. Here is how easy it is to make your own 'homemade' cleaner.

Window cleaner: In an empty spray bottle - mix 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water and 1 tablespoon vinegar. Trust me, after using this, you will never buy commercial window cleaners again.

Bathtub and Toilet Scrub: Mix equal parts baking soda and borax. Wet the surface before you dust this mix and scrub with a brush. What I love about this cleaning mixture is that there is no soapy residue that creates scum build up.

All Purpose Cleaner: Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup vinegar, 1 tablespoon of dish detergent and water.

De-clutter and Organize as you clean. Spring cleaning is a great time to take stock of everything you have, organize it and get rid of what you don’t use. You do not need to spend a fortune on organizational gadgets. Pack away off-season items in moving boxes (you can probably get free via Freecycle.org).

As you go through your items, sort what you will no longer use into:

  • Items to repurpose
  • Items to donate
  • Items to sell

  • Selling no longer needed items is a great way to make some extra money as a result of your spring cleaning. Here are a few outlets you can use for selling your stuff: hold a garage sale, sell on CraigslistEbay or sell it via consignment store.
