13 Fun & Frugal Ideas for a Summer Staycation

  1. The local library is a great find for free rentable DVDs and story times and reading incentives for all ages.
  2. Have a family night! Play board games, watch a movie or have the kids put on a show for the parents.
  3. Kids love to play "Office". Fill a shoebox with inexpensive or castoff office supplies like pencils, a highlighter, notepaper, paper clips, a mini stapler, tape, a dollar-store calculator, stickers... the possibilities are endless. Let each child decorate their own box, and keep the boxes handy for rainy days or boring afternoons. Keep an eye out for supplies at thrift stores, yard sales and dollar stores.
  4. Have a garage sale and get some spring cleaning done. It teaches the kids the concept of money, works on their math skills, and allows them to be social and meet new people. Afterwards, donate all the unsold items to teach the kids the importance of philanthropy.
  5. Visit the local bike trails and go biking as a family.
  6. Get the kids involved in gardening and re-potting plants. Kids love to dig in the dirt.
  7. Have a luau. Wear your swimsuits, dance and have a fun time. If the weather is bad, take the luau inside.
  8. Make up a fun scavenger hunt around your town and end up at a fun place to eat! The kids get to read maps, look at sites, and discover new things.
  9. Contact Parks & Recreation for things people can do. They usually have a calendar of events.
  10. Go to your local YMCA/YWCA and take the family swimming, play basketball or do some arts and crafts.
  11. Tour local playgrounds. Pack a picnic, take the bikes and travel from playground to playground.
  12. Have a field day event. Set up different outside activities and invite neighborhood friends. Make sure to have an obstacle course, you can use things around the house to set it up, like sand pails and broom handles for limbo, etc.
  13. Camp in the backyard. If the weather is bad, camp indoors with a real tent or make a fort with blankets.
