Summer birthdays can be tons of fun with so many outdoor options: swimming, hiking, and parks. But as the mom planning the party, we immediately see a challenge in packaging goodies to travel. And as a mom who has hosted many “away” birthday parties and served tons of snacks outdoors, I can tell you that it’s all in the packaging.
First decide what you want to serve. For a recent art themed birthday party I whipped up these Rice Krispies Paint Brush Treats. These are super simple to make, fit easily inside a 4” cello bag and can be eaten without utensils. They hit all the “away” requirements.

To make these Treats, first collect your ingredients.

Make your Kellogg’s Rice Krispies® Treats. See Recipe.

Allow the mixture to cool from hot to warm, apply butter to your hands liberally, mold the Treats into rectangles and place the shapes on a piece of wax paper to cool.

Before the Treats harden completely, insert the wooden ice cream spoons about half way.

Heat the chocolate melts in a microwave safe bowl in increments of eight to nine seconds and stir between heating.

Once the chocolate is completely melted, dip the Rice Krispies cereal into the chocolate and place back on wax paper to dry.

We also served our pint sized artists apples and oranges. In addition to the “away” requirements that I mentioned above, try to choose snacks that can be easily carried away by your guests. When hosting an outdoor bash guests are typically more spread out and tend to graze.
Ease your stress with pre-packaged snacks like the Kellogg’s Variety Snack Pack for an assortment of salty and sweet, Gripz Variety Pack which is great for kids on the move or the 100 Calorie Right Bites Variety Pack for calorie conscious parents. With so many choices in one box there’s something for everyone. And don’t just put the box on the table, grab a basket, line it with a piece of coordinating fabric or colorful napkins and display the bags so that your pint sized guests can see all of their yummy choices.
The most important thing to remember when hosting an outdoor party this summer, have fun and your guests will too!
